OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Bolstered by yet another strong defensive performance, CUA upped its record to 8-1 with a 62-44 road win at Stevenson on Saturday evening.  The Cardinals held the Mustangs to 28% shooting and forced 29 turnovers to win their eighth straight game.

CUA received a game-high 17 points from Jill Woerner on 5 of 10 shooting, and she also pulled down nine rebounds.  Kelli Josephsen finished with a double-double, registering 13 points and 10 boards, while Jenny McGann added 10 tallies and eight rebounds.

The Cardinals held a 47-32 advantage on the backboards, and a 32-16 lead in points in the paint. 

Stevenson, which made only 17 of 61 field goal tries, placed just one player in double figures with Kyarra Harmon netting 10 points.  She also pulled down five rebounds, while Pee-Jay Gunn handed out six helpers.

Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm in the early going, with neither squad able to score for the first 2:20.  Woerner put a stop to that with a pair of free throws at the 17:40 mark, and that started a run of eight straight points by CUA to begin the game.

Stevenson responded with nine straight points to take a one-point lead, but Josephsen drilled a 3-pointer down the other end to put the Cardinals back on top.

The Mustangs took a 14-13 lead on Gunn's jumper at the 9:03 mark, but CUA ripped off an 8-0 run to go back in front 21-14 with 6:41 to play before halftime.

Kayla Kelly's jumper at the 3:29 mark brought Stevenson within 23-18, but that proved to be the Mustangs final points of the half, as CUA scored the final eight points to take a 31-18 advantage into the locker room.

The Cardinals stayed hot after the break, scoring the first six points of the second to open up a 37-18 lead.

Holly Janicki's bucket at the 13:42 mark gave CUA its largest lead of the evening up to that point, 44-24, and after Josephsen splashed two free throws, the Cardinals were in front by 22.

A McGann 3-pointer, followed by a Josephsen jumper and Emily Grabiak foul shot pushed CUA's lead to 27 with 8:06 to play, but Stevenson answered with a 9-0 run to pull within 54-36 at the 5:35 mark.

Two straight buckets by the Cardinals pushed their lead back past 20 points, and CUA cruised from there to its eighth straight win.

CUA will return to action on December 30 when the Cardinals host Thiel College in the CUA Holiday Tournament inside the DuFour Center.  Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. with St. John Fisher and Washington College meeting in the other opening round game.  The two winners will then square off on December 31.
