CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Elms College freshman forward Denisha Parks (Fall River, Mass.) scored a game-high 20 points and junior guard Jennifer Normandie (Westford, Mass.) followed with 17 points to help pace the Blazers to a convincing, 73-29 win over Lesley University in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball game in Cambridge, Mass.
Elms extends its winning streak to four games to improve to 5-2 overall, 2-0 in league play, while Lesley remains winless on the season and falls to 0-6 overall, 0-2 in conference action. Elms notched its first victory over the Lynx since the 2008-09 campaign and is now even with Lesley in the all-time series, 12-12 dating back to 1999-2000.
Elms, which held Lesley to just nine first half points, stormed out of the gate with a 13-0 run over the first 6:02 before Lesley's Sarah Apgar (Andover, N.J.) hit a jump shot to put the Lynx on the board.
A 16-4 run over the next 10 minutes sparked by a layup from Parks and capped by a jumper from sophomore guard Taylor Darby (Bristol, Conn.) increased Elms' lead to 29-6 with 3:53 remaining in the opening frame.
Carrie Fieger (Simsbury, Conn.) netted the final basket of the first period – a three-pointer at the 1:23 mark – to set the score at 29-9 at intermission.
The Blazers shot 30.0-percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and 71.4-percent from the free throw stripe, while Lelsey was held to just 15.4-percent from the floor and 0.0-percent from the free throw line.
Elms began the second stanza in similar fashion as it started the first, using a 15-0 run over the first 5:41 to stake a commanding 44-9 cushion.
The Blazers held Lesley to 20 points in the final 20 minutes and built their lead to as many as 51 (69-18) with 4:13 remaining in the contest.
Parks was 9 of 18 from the field en route to her game-high total of 20 points, while Normandie was 6 of 12 from the floor and 5 of 7 from the stripe and finished with 17 points.
Darby and senior forward Erika Murphy (Torrington, Conn.) each added eight points, while Murphy totaled a game-best 17 rebounds in the winning effort. Normandie and Parks each chipped in nine boards as the Blazers held a 69-43 edge in rebounding in the win.
Emily Fleming (Medford, Mass.) was stellar in defeat for the Lynx, notching a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds, both team highs, in addition to handing out four assists.
Apgar added eight points, Fieger contributed three rejections and Chelsea Contre (Pomfret, Conn.) hauled in eight rebounds.
Elms scored 26 points off 25 Lesley turnovers, while the Blazers' bench outscored Lesley's 25-2.
The Blazers conclude first semester action on Saturday, Dec. 17 when they travel to Westfield State University for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
