Strong First Half Pushes Cortland Past Fredonia, 68-52

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Freshman Brittany Rando led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points as Cortland defeated host Fredonia State, 68-52, in a SUNYAC contest. The Red Dragons snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

Rando hit 3-of-6 three pointers and recorded two steals in just 13 minutes of playing time off the bench. She scored 10 of her 13 points in the first half to help the Red Dragons take a 32-19 halftime lead.

Senior Brittany Cohen finished with 12 points, four assists and two steals and senior Megan Maycumber scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman Tashia Morris chipped in with career highs of eight points and five rebounds and senior Molly Byrne added seven points, four assists, four rebounds and two steals.

Jenna Austin paced Fredonia (5-5, 1-3 SUNYAC) with 12 points and Jamie Warren netted 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. Kristina Kuscht finished with 10 points, Nicole Calbi had nine points and four assists and Anna Riley and Liz Wierbinski shared team honors with 10 rebounds each.

Cortland fell behind 5-0 to start the game and didn't score for nearly five minutes, but the Red Dragons eventually got on track. Trailing 9-8 with 12:39 left in the half, Cortland
held the Blue Devils scoreless for more than seven minutes during a 15-point streak. Rando scored eight points, including two treys, and Morris scored five points in that stretch.

The Red Dragons led 32-19 at halftime and scored the first nine points of the second half – five by Byrne – to take a comfortable lead. Cortland's lead grew to as much as 33 points at 62-29 with 7:15 remaining and was still at 27 points with 2:16 left before Fredonia scored the game's final 11 points.

Cortland will host William Smith on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. in the Red Dragons' final game of the 2011 calendar year.
