Katie Burton put UW-W on the board just three seconds into the game with a layup. The Blugolds responded with eight straight to take an early 8-2 lead with 17:21 left in the first half. The Warhawks whittled away the deficit and took a one point lead, 16-15, on a Mary Merg layup at 10:46. With the score knotted 19-19 at 7:48, UW-W surged with an 8-2 run to take a six point lead 27-21. The Warhawks would hit their largest lead of seven three times in the remainder of the half but the teams would head to the lockerrooms with Whitewater ahead just three, 35-32.
UW-W scored 10 points off turnovers to Eau Claire's four in the first half. Merg led all scorers in the first twenty minutes with 17 points and four steals but the Blugolds held the advantage on the boards grabbing 23 rebounds to Whitewater's 14.
Merg got things started in the second half for UW-W with a three pointer to widen the gap to six, 38-32. Much like the first half, the Blugolds responded and a 12-4 run swayed the momentum back to Eau Claire with a 46-42 lead with 15:45 left to play. Down by two, UW-W took the lead back on a 7-0 run to take a 55-50 lead at 10:16. The Blugolds responded a couple minutes later with their own 7-0 run forcing another lead change in favor of the home team, 61-58, with 6:08 to go. Burton's pair of free throws with 2:18 left in the game cut the Blugold lead to one, 69-68 but Eau Claire was able to extend the lead to six points with just 23 seconds remaining in the game. Unable to overcome the deficit, the Warhawks dropped their second straight game.
Eau Claire turned the tables in the second half with a 16-10 advantage in points in the paint and 9-2 bulge in points off turnovers.
The Warhawks made five more three's than EC and had 10 steals in the game but the Blugolds used a 42-30 advantage in rebounds and six blocks to even the score.
Merg led all scorers with her career high 29. Chantel Burg added 11 points and three steals for the Warhawks.
Two EC players posted double-doubles including Callie Halama with 23 points and 11 rebounds and Ellen Plendl had 16 points and grabbed 10 boards. Nicole Chrisianson added 19 points and six assists.
UW-W is now 6-3 this season and 1-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Eau Claire is 7-2 and 3-0 in league play.
The Warhawks will host UW-Stevens Point Wednesday, December 14 at 7:00 in Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
