GENEVA, N.Y. – Loren Wagner scored 15 points and grabbed a career high 16 rebounds to lead the University of Rochester to a 61-53 victory over William Smith College on Saturday afternoon.
Danielle McNabb added 14 points for Rochester. She handed out two assists, made one steal, and blocked three shots.
The Yellowjackets needed the inside combination as Rochester did not make a three-point shot for the first time since January, 2002 – a string of 282 games.
Jaimie Rubin led William Smith (3-3) with 13 points. Chloe Hayter scored 10 points. Jacqueline Murphy grabbed 11 rebounds.
Rochester improved to 9-0. The Yellowjackets are ranked fifth in Division III by d3hoops.com.
Wagner and Jackie Walker combined for eight points to key a 10-0 run midway through the first half that pushed Rochester in front, 20-13. William Smith answered with a 10-0 spurt of its own to go ahead, 23-20, with 5:02 left.
Baskets by Ally Zywicki, Laney Ming, and Wagner put Rochester ahead, 31-28 at halftime. The Yellowjackets pushed it to seven points early in the second half before the Herons got a basket from Rubin, a three-pointer from Sasha Borenstein, and a bucket from Hayter to close within 41-40.
Wagner's layup, a jumper by Michelle Ketcham, and Walker's runner in the lane stretched Rochester's lead to 55-46 with 3:52 to go.
