Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball Team played an excellent defensive game but could not get hot offensively, shooting a mere 23% from the field in falling to the #8 ranked team in the nation, Lebanon Valley, 61-47. With the win, the Flying Dutchmen improve to a perfect 8-0 on the season, while Brooklyn falls to 6-2.
Points were hard to come by at the start of play as both teams brought some high level play on the defensive side of the ball. Tiffany Thompson got the first points of the game 2:29 into the half as she made one of two at the line to give Brooklyn a 1-0 lead.
Lebanon Valley's Kiely Chaklos converted a basket to give her squad the lead, however BC's Lauren Plagainos would make a driving shot of her own to regain the advantage, 3-2, with 14:34 to play in the first stanza. The visitors would get two free throws from senior Caitlin Murphy to regain the advantage, and be the start of a 10-2 run that would balloon the lead to six.
Plagainos would answer with a three pointer to cut the deficit to three, 12-9, as play would remain even for the next few minutes and a Nicole Francomano three-pointer cutting the deficit to two, 18-16, with 5:49 to play.
LVC would go on a 14-3 run to push the lead to 13, 32-19, with 1:55 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs would show some bite as they closed the half with seven straight points, as two Francomano free throws, a Kelly Jamison basket and another Plagainos three, cut the deficit to six, 32-26.
The second half saw the Flying Dutchmen start play with a 11-2 run over the first 6:25 of the half. A team that advanced to last year's Elite Eight, Lebanon Valley would not let Brooklyn get close again, as they held on for the 14-point victory.
Coach Alex Lang attributed the loss to a lack of execution on the offensive end, saying, "We had chances early in the second half to cut into their lead, but we couldn't put the ball in the hoop and then we started to become impatient. You cannot do that against a team of their caliber. They are true to the way they play and they were the better team tonight. With that being said, I am proud of our effort on the defensive end and I take some positives out of this game."
The Bulldogs' backcourt of Francomano and Plagainos were two of those bright spots, as they scored 16 points a piece. Another hightlight for BC was forced 26 turnovers and 16 steals on the evening.
LVC came into the game as an imposing squad, outrebounding their opponents 334-234 in seven games, while holding opponents to under 27% from the field. While they did outrebound the Bulldogs overall, Brooklyn did manage to hold a 15-13 advantage on the offensive boards.
