CAMDEN, N.J. - The Rosemont Ravens women's basketball team weathered a disappointing performance in the first half to win the game going away in the second half over the Arcadia University Knights on the second day of competition in the Raptor Classic held at Rutgers University-Camden. The Ravens put the game in their win column by a final score of 80-59. The win puts the Ravens at 2-1 while Arcadia now sits at 0-3.
Neither team could put much space between themselves in the first term. The half featured six lead changes and seven ties. Arcadia kept themselves in the game scoring 13 points off turnovers and scoring 14 in the paint. The Knight's ability to drive to the basket resulted in many more fouls called against Rosemont. That led to many more free throws taken by the Knights in the half (shot 6-12 compared to the Ravens 1-2). The Ravens seemed content to throw long-range shots at the basket and keep close. The Ravens once led by six points in the half, but fell behind 29-28 on an offensive rebound and layup by the Knights at the halftime buzzer.
After sniffing the lead 35-34, the Knights continued to put pressure on the Ravens, taking their largest lead of the game, 39-34 with 16:10 remaining. At that point the Ravens defensive press started to affect the Knights. With the teams tied 46-46 with 9:58 left in the game the Ravens pressure started to pay off as Rosemont outscored Arcadia 33-10 over the next 8:40 to take a 23-point lead. The Raven's shooting was scalding hot in the second half at 48.6% from the field.
Junior Ashley Montecchio (Aston, Pa.) had an enormous game, scoring a career-high 27 points (13-28 from the field) and 15 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Montecchio was also credited with three blocked shots and two steals. Three first-year students also scored in double-digits for the Ravens. Liz Coyne (West Chester, Pa.) had 14 points, Alex Gravinese (Audubon, NJ) also had 14 points and Brittany Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 10. First year Nymira Nelson (Philadelphia, Pa.) grabbed nine boards and Coyne was credited with eight rebounds of her own. Coyne, Nelson and Wilson each had four steals on the afternoon.
Montecchio and Coyne were named to the Raptor Classic All-Tournament team.
The last time the Rosemont women's basketball team scored 161 points combined in two consecutive games was in the 1996/97 season when they defeated Chestnut Hill College 84-43 and Philadelphia College of Bible 77-43. The team record for combined points in two consecutive games is 162, done in 1985/86 (Won over Valley Forge Christian 75-49, Lost to Lancaster Bible College 90-87). The last time the Ravens began the season with a winning record after three games played was in 2005/06.
The Ravens look to open their conference schedule on Monday, 11/28 when they travel to Gwynedd-Mercy College to play against the Griffins. The CSAC contest is scheduled to begin at 6:00pm.
