Sabres hot three-point shooting too much for Edgewood College

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Sometimes teams get a zone and it feels like they can't miss. That's what the Edgewood College women's basketball team ran into on Thursday night at Marian University. The Sabres shot the lights out from three-point range in their 70-41 victory.

The Eagles (2-4, 2-2 NAC) started quick, scoring the first five points of the game. Chelsey Watkins made a layup before Alison Tobin converted an old fashioned three-point play to put the Eagles ahead 5-0 two minutes into the contest. However, the Eagle offense when ice cold and Marian heated up after that. The Sabres (5-3, 2-3 NAC) hit four three-point shots eight free throws on their 20-0 run that gave them a commanding 20-5 lead with just over six minutes left in the fist half.

Melanie Walker ended a 12:57 scoring drought a free throw at the six minute mark, and Melissa Wellnitz ended the field goal drought when she hit a running jump shot with 4:01 left in the half. Jenna Coenen nailed a three-point basket with 2:12 left cut the deficit to 27-14, but the Sabres' Alyssa Pyscher answered with a three-point basket to make the halftime score 30-14.

The Sabres shot 42.9 (6-for-14) percent from three-point range in the first half while holding the Eagles to 18.2 (4-for-22) percent shooting from the floor. Of Marian's eight buckets in the first half, six were three-point baskets.

The Sabres' hot shooting continued as they started the second half with consecutive three-point baskets and Kayla Rowly capped the 12-0 run to start the half with a pair of free throws. Coenen ended the spurt with a free throw with just under 16 minutes left. She missed the second attempt, but Walker grabbed the board and laid it in to cut the deficit to 42-17.

However, Marian's Sarah Albert made a three-point basket on the other end to extend the lead. The Sabres earned their largest lead of the game, 36 points with 7:25 remaining. Edgewood College tried to cut into the deficit but the Sabre offense was too much as they took the contest 70-41.

Chantelle Vogt led the Eagles with a career-high 10 points off the bench as she knocked down a pair of three-point shots in the second half. Walked grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

The Sabres shot a blistering 48.1 (13-for-27) percent from three-point range in the game while holding the Eagles to 22.4 percent (11-for-49) from the field.
