Brooklyn Edges Out St. Joe's (BK) 69-65

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team took home a hard fought victory on the road over borough rival St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) this evening at Brooklyn Technical High School, as the Bulldogs topped the Lady Bears 69-65.

With the win, BC improves to 6-1 overall on the season, while St. Joe's (BK) falls to 1-6 overall on the year.

The Bulldogs were led by junior Tiffany Thompson who recorded a double-double with a team-high 17 points to go along with a game-high 13 rebounds. Senior Justine O'Callahan chipped in with 14 points, while freshman Nicole Francomano and senior Lauren Plagainos finished the night with nine and eight points, respectively.

For the Lady Bears, Teresa Mangan led all scorers with a game-high 20 points, while Janine Doran recorded a double-double with 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Ashley McQuillan also added 16 points for St. Joe's (BK).

The Lady Bears jumped out to an early 11-5 advantage at the 14:39 mark of the first half. They would lead by six again minutes later, 16-10, with 11:56 remaining before the intermission break. The Bulldogs would chip away at their deficit and eventually tie the game at 19-19 on a layup from O'Callahan at the 8:54 mark. BC would take its first lead of the game on a layup from Thompson moments later with 8:26 left in the half.

Brooklyn would lead by as many as six points on two occasions. After a layup from Asia Foster gave the Bulldogs a 37-31 lead at the 2:12 mark, the Lady Bears would close out the half on a 6-0 run, as the teams headed into the locker room knotted at 37 all.

The second half featured much of the same as both teams exchanged baskets and leads early on. Trailing by one, 46-45, with 14:57 left in the game, BC used an 11-1 run to take a nine point lead, 56-47, the largest of the game. A three-pointer from Plagainos capped the run at the 8:15 mark.

The host Lady Bears would not go down quietly, however, as St. Joe's stormed back with a 15-5 run to regain the lead, 62-61, with just 2:03 left in the game.

In the end, the Bulldogs would not be denied the victory, as Brooklyn's Francomano and Thompson converted key layups and free throws to help BC outscore the Lady Bears 8-3 in the final two minutes of the game to squeak out the 69-65 win.

For the game, Brooklyn shot 36.9% (24-65) from the field and 35.7% (5-14) from beyond the arc, while going 16-for-27 (59.3%) from the free throw line.

The Lady Bears shot 33.3% (23-69) from both the field and three (5-15), while shooting 70.0% (14-20) from the charity stripe.

BC outrebounded St. Joe's 58-39 and also outscored the Lady Bears 32-16 in the paint.

Brooklyn will be back in action this Thursday, December 8th, as the Bulldogs will welcome the Flying Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley College to the West Quad Center. Lebanon Valley is currently ranked #8 in the nation according to the latest D3Hoops.com Women's Basketball Top-25 Poll. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
