NEW YORK, NY - The Hunter College women's basketball team was defeated by Vassar College, 69-67.
The Hawks led the game 67-66 with just over 30 seconds to play when Cyndni Matsouka (15 points, 6 assists) stole the ball and raced to the basket for the lead-taking basket. She was fouled on the play and converted the free throw - giving the Brewers the three-point victory.
Kristen Markoe led all scorers with 21 points, as Alease Vaughan added 17. Nicole Lenard and Megan McKenna added 13 and 10 points respectively.
Despite a 50 percent effort from the floor in the first half (14-28), Vassar trailed Hunter by three at halftime, 39-36. The Hawks shot over 46 percent (18-39), including 20 points in the paint. Hunter capitalized on Vassar's nine first-half turnovers, scoring 14 points from them.
The teams battled back and forth in the second half, as there were seven lead changes and four ties. The Brewers tied the game at 64 with over two minutes left, but Marta Banach made the front end of a one-and-one to give the Hawks the lead. Vaughan added two more points from the charity stripe with than 100 seconds left to go to set the stage for what turned out to be Matsouka's game-winning three point play. Hunter again dominated in the paint in the second half, outscoring Vassar 14-2 from inside. But in addition to their accuracy from behind the arc (6-17) it was the Brewers turn to capitalize on turnovers in the second half, scoring ten off of ten Hawks' giveaways.
