TOWSON, Md. – The Hood College women's basketball team (1-6) presented head coach Jack Mehl with his first victory in the blue-and-grey Monday evening as the Blazers defeated Goucher College (1-6), 63-58, in nonconference action.

Two Blazers registered "double doubles" on the night and Hood recorded a season-high 63 points in securing its first victory of 2011-12. Rachel Wiley tallied 15 points and grabbed a game-high 16 boards while Emily Maerz came off the bench to contribute 14 points and 11 rebounds. The "double double" was Wiley's second of the season while Maerz notched the first "double double" of her Hood career.

Despite falling behind in the early moments of the first half, a bucket by Wiley at the 11:57 mark gave Hood a lead it would not surrender (9-7). Three different Blazers then hit layups to extend the Hood lead to 15-7 and the Gophers got no closer than four the rest of the half. Hood owned a 23-16 halftime lead, marking the first time this season that Hood held the upperhand heading into the locker room.

The Blazers would not be denied at the onset of the second half, swishing 4-for-4 from the field to start the period, including a pair of triples by Heather Boyce. Her second trey gave the Blazers a 15-point advantage, 35-20, just 2:42 into the stanza. Hood's lead ballooned to as many as 18 after Dyanna Prater found Maerz behind the arc for one of her two three-pointers on the night, making it 45-27 Hood with 12:37 to play. The Gophers closed to within four (62-58) with 15 seconds to play following a conventional three-point play by Sharnell Huff but it was too little too late as the Blazers hung on for the win.

Prater finished with 19 points, four steals and two assists while Boyce had seven points and Jessica Talley chipped in five. Briana Lee dished four assists while Dorrie Mercer connected on her only field goal attempt of the contest and had a rebound and an assist.

The Blazers next travel to Frostburg State University Wednesday for a 6 p.m. Capital Athletic Conference tilt.
