Beavers run out to lead, roll by GMC

FARMINGTON, Maine -- The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team ran out to an 18-1 lead to roll to a 67-42 victory over Green Mountain College in North Atlantic Conference women's basketball action this afternoon at Dearborn Gymnasium.

The Beavers (2-5 overall, 1-1 NAC) are scheduled to visit New England College Friday at 7:30 p.m., while the Eagles (2-5, 0-2) host Maine Maritime Academy on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Kenni Norton (Strong, Maine) led the Beavers with game-high 17 points as 11 different players reached the scoring column in the win. Rachel Clement (Gray, Maine), Kelsey Graffam (Falmouth, Maine) and Lindsay Ranquist (Owls Head, Maine) each scored eight points for UMF, while Paige Saunders (Surry, Maine) grabbed 11 rebounds and swatted four shots. Ranquist also made five steals.

Chelsea Paul (Northville, N.Y.) tallied 16 points and pulled down nine boards for the Eagles with Chanleigh Casey (Hartford, N.Y.) collecting 12 points and game-high 13 rebounds. Green Mountain managed to outshoot the Beavers 32.7 percent (17-52) to 31.8 (28-88), but only made 20.8 percent (5-24) in the first half as UMF built a 35-14 halftime advantage.

A Ranquist 3-pointer and three-point play headlined the big open for the Beavers as the hosts  bolted out to an 18-1 advantage over the first 6:21 of the contest. UMF held Green Mountain without a field goal for the first 7:27 when a Paul layup cut the lead to 18-4.

The Beavers' cushion inflated to 35-9 on a Marisa Kelley (Hermon, Maine) layup with 1:14 to play as UMF carried a 35-14 advantage into intermission.

The Beavers outscored Green Mountain 8-2 out of the break to push out to a 43-16 advantage on an Emma Morrison (Saco, Maine) three with 17:25 left in the game. The Eagles chipped away at the deficit with a Casey jumper trimming the advantage to 49-33 with 10:15 to playand finishing off a 12-4 stretch that featured three baskets from Casey.

UMF used a 16-4 run over the next 4:44 to quash a possible Green Mountain rally to lead the Beavers to the 67-42 win. Norton buried a pair of threes in the stretch.
