Nazareth routs Brockport, 64-35

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Freshman Michelle Melanson scored a career-best 11 points Thursday as a freshly energized Nazareth women's basketball team dominated Brockport from start to finish in a 64-35 victory in a consolation game of the Wendy's College Classic.
 
In the game played at St. John's Fisher's Manning/Napier Gymnasium, the Golden Flyers snapped a three-game losing streak and evened their overall record at 3-3. Brockport is 1-3. Nazareth will play again Saturday at 3 p.m. at William Smith against the winner of Thursday's second consolation game between St. John Fisher and Geneseo.
 
Utilizing some intense defensive pressure, Nazareth limited Brockport to just one field goal and five foul shots in the first half while causing 13 turnovers in building a commanding 34-7 lead. Melanson led the way offensively in the first 20 minutes with eight points. Fellow freshman Hannah Runyon had five first-half assists.
 
Brockport scored on its first shot of the game, then went 0 for 23 the rest of the first half. Melanson drilled a three-pointer about a minute later. Then after Brockport made two free throws, freshman Maria Allocco scored to put Nazareth up 5-4 and the Golden Flyers never trailed thereafter.
 
As the lead continued to grow, Nazareth coach Devin Gotham was able to substitute freely as all 18 players saw action. In addition to Melanson, senior Katie Kollar scored nine points and seniors  Ashley Gallagher and Brittany TallChief  each had six. Allocco had a team-high six rebounds. Phoebe Byrnes scored 10 points for Brockport.

Nazareth made 24 of 56 shots overall (.429), including 8 of 19 three-point tries (.421). Brockport went 10 for 51 from the field overall (.196). Nazareth also enjoyed a 52-35 reounding edge.
