Regals Unable to Topple No. 3 Bruins

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran battled with No. 3 George Fox and even took the lead early in the second half. The Bruins held a slim lead throughout most of the final 15 minutes before pulling away late for a 63-51 decision over the Regals.

The Cal Lutheran defense would be put to the test facing a pair of D3hoops.com pre-season All-Americans on Sunday in center Hannah Munger and forward Keisha Gordon.

Among many different CLU players, Shana Moore and Rachel Heagy were primarily responsible for stopping Munger. After she contributed 24 points and 13 rebounds Saturday against Chapman, the 6-foot-5 junior center finished with 11 points and seven rebounds on the offensive end. Munger also finished with six of the team's seven blocks on the afternoon.

The Regals held the Bruins to just 28 first half points and trailed by only three at the break. They held George Fox scoreless for a seven minute stretch in which Cal Lutheran eventually recaptured the lead.

Chelsey Hastigan's three-pointer late in the first half sparked the scoring run. Regals junior Rachel Heagy capped off an 11-0 spurt at the 15:48 mark of the second half that put Cal Lutheran up 30-28.

George Fox responded on its ensuing possession to tie the game and would not trail the rest of the way. Just when Cal Lutheran looked to pull ahead again it was Gordon who kept the Bruins ahead.

On two different second half occasions after the Regals tied the game it was Gordon who put the Bruins back out front. During one stretch she scored six straight points and netted 12 of her game-high 20 in the second half.

Cal Lutheran trailed 46-44 with under five minutes to go when George Fox pulled away for good. Three's from Gordon and Arianna Mohsenian highlighted a quick 8-0 scoring run in the final three minutes putting Cal Lutheran down by double figures.

Moore was effective in her limited floor time due to foul trouble. In 22 minutes she scored a team-high 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Hastigan scored 11 with nine coming courtesy of three triples.

To open Sunday's action Whitworth defeated Chapman, 81-62. The Pirates featured five players who scored in double figures led by Lexi Belcher with 17 points. Kayla Johnson finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds (nine offensive).

Keisha Gordon from George Fox was named the Best Western Posada Royale Thanksgiving Classic Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Hannah Munger (George Fox), Chesley Hastigan (Cal Lutheran), Shana Moore (Cal Lutheran), Kayla Johnson (Whitworth), Emily Guthrie (Whitworth), and Kimi Takaoka (Chapman) were each named to the All-Classic Team.

Cal Lutheran (2-2) will travel to Pennsylvania to take on Moravian on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 1 p.m. EST.
