Box Score: CLU 67, WHTW 64 - F
Hastigan knocked down a personal best six three-pointers with a pair coming at crucial junctures in Saturday's win. Her fifth completed a 10-0 scoring run that tied the game with 12:36 left in regulation. The last gave Cal Lutheran its biggest lead of the contest at seven points with 80 seconds left on the clock.
Cal Lutheran had possession leading 65-62 with 40 seconds left on the clock. The Regals had knocked down 9-of-10 second half free throw attempts to that point and had their choice of strategy. Cal Lutheran could either run down the shot clock to leave limited time for Whitworth to score, or force the Pirates to put them at the charity stripe.
CLU quickly broke through the Pirates full court defense leaving Hastigan open for a corner three-point attempt. Hastigan looked to put the game away but missed. Whitworth secured the rebound and had another chance to score and possibly send the game into overtime.
"I probably took a shot I shouldn't have taken," said Hastigan. "I never really felt like the game was out of our hands. After the poise we showed in our previous game I felt comfortable we could get it done."
The senior had made her previous three attempts from downtown prior to that final minute miss. She finished 6-for-10 from behind the arc and led the team with four assists and two steals.
Whitworth had felt comfortable behind the arc in the first half knocking down seven three-pointers. After Emily Guthrie missed on two game-tying shots teammate Kayla Johnson got to the free throw line converting both attempts making it 65-64 with 14 seconds left.
Cal Lutheran's Shana Moore made two clutch free throws of her own with nine seconds remaining to push the Regals lead back to three. A final three-pointer taken by Jamie Lyons missed and Cal Lutheran hung on for victory.
Lyons shot 7-for-14 from the floor and led the Pirates with 16 points. Guthrie finished with 15 points courtesy of five triples.
Cameron Jones led the Cal Lutheran bench with 10 points in 19 minutes. She outscored the Pirates bench on her own and overall the Regals reserves outscored their counterparts 20-8.
For the second straight game Cal Lutheran has completed a comeback effort when trailing by 10 or more points. The Regals faced an 11-point first half deficit to the Pirates and went on to win by three. On Monday they trailed Colorado Christian by 13 in the opening period before rallying to defeat the Cougars in overtime.
