Falcons hold off late Edgewood College rally

MEQUON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball team opened up Northern Athletics Conference play Saturday afternoon at Concordia University Wisconsin in what turned out to be a game of runs. The Falcons used a run to take the lead before the Eagles came storming back in the first half. However, Concordia Wisconsin held off a late Eagle rally to move to 1-0 in NAC play with the 61-52 victory.

With the score tied at nine with 12:20 left in the first half, Dareon Henderson and Chelsey Watkins put the Eagles (0-3, 0-1 NAC) up 13-9 with back-to-back buckets. Concordia Wisconsin (1-2, 1-0 NAC) had an answer, however. Tiffany Hendrickson gave the Falcons a 14-13 lead with a three-point basket. The lead reached as many as 10 when Brittney Toles made a layup with 4:41 remaining to cap a 14-0 Falcon run.

Henderson ended the streak when she grabbed an offensive rebound and converted a shot from the middle of the lane. Melanie Walker followed with a three-point basket before Mallory Palmer hit a jump shot to make the score 23-20. Hendrickson sunk a pair of free throws before Allison Novitske made a layup with 1:30 left in the first half. Henderson converted a layup with 31 seconds left as the Eagles closed the first stanza on an 11-2 run to get within one point at 25-24.

Concordia Wisconsin scored the first four points of the second half to grab a quick five point lead. Edgewood College cut the deficit to 32-29 three minutes into the second half when Mariah Hill converted a layup. Katie Luethe extended the Falcon lead to nine when she hit consecutive jump shots, the second coming with 13:36 remaining. Watkins ended the quick 6-0 spurt with a layup to make the score 38-31.

The Falcons earned their largest lead of the game, 11 points three times, the last coming with 8:05 left to play. At that point, the Eagles tried to come back behind Hill. The freshman scored seven straight points for the Eagles, starting with a three-point basket with 5:29 left. She then made a pair of layups to make the score 52-45. Hill nailed another triple with 52 seconds left to make the score 55-50 before Alison Tobin knocked down a pair of free throws to pull the Eagles within four at 56-52. However, the Eagles could not get any closer, falling 61-52.

Hill led the Eagles with 14 points while Walker was the only other Eagle in double figures with 11 points. Henderson chipped in with eight points, all coming in the first half, while Hill grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Luethe led the Falcons with 18 points while Brittany Zietlow and Hendrickson tallied 11 points apiece.
