INDIANOLA, Iowa - Stacey Schutjer scored 16 of her game-high 18 points in the first half and Simpson led from wire-to-wire, beating Carleton 85-70 in the home-opener on Friday night.
The game was the second of the semi-annual Simpson Classic, as Grand View beat Buena Vista 83-78 in overtime to kick off the tournament.
The Storm (3-1) raced out to a 16-0 lead in the first seven minutes and never looked back. Kate Nielsen (Urbandale, Iowa) chipped in with 17 points, going a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Ali Sokol (Urbandale, Iowa) came within a point of a double-double, grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds.
Skylar Tsutsui and Jenny Ramey led the way with 16 points apiece for the Knights (0-1). After the slow start, a Meagan Meads jumper sparked a 10-0 run for Carleton which made the score 16-10 midway through the first half.
But that's as close as the Knights would get. Schutjer (Titonka, Iowa) scored six of the Storm's next 10 points, pushing the lead back to 16.
The win is Simpson's 13th-consecutive in a home-opener.
Play begins at 1 p.m. Saturday when Carleton plays Buena Vista. Simpson and Grand View play the finale, which will tip off at approximately 3 p.m.
