PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball team's season got off to a rocky start at the Gabe Miller Tipoff Classic against the University of Dubuque. The Spartans jumped on the Eagles early, scoring the first six points of the game and took the game 81-55.

After Dubuque (1-0) quickly gained a 6-0 lead, Alison Tobin made a free throw and Dareon Henderson made a layup to cut the deficit in half. The Spartan lead grew to as many as 20 points twice in the first half, and with 3:30 left in the frame, Mariah Hill sparked a quick Eagle spurt with a three-point basket. Tobin drained a jump shot after a Spartan basket and Allison Novitske made a free throw to make the halftime score 34-18 in favor of Dubuque.

Dubuque opened their lead up to 29 points in the second half until the Eagles (0-1) went on a run. Tobin started the 8-0 spurt with a layup and Melanie Walker followed with a three-point basket. Hill then converted an old fashioned three-point play after she got fouled and made a layup. After a Spartan free throw, Brittany Bylsma cut the deficit to 20 points when she drained a jump shot.

A pair of Novitske free throws, followed by a Walker steal and layup cut deficit to 71-52 before Emily Wayne drained a jumper from the left wing to cut the deficit to 18 with 2:02 remaining. However, Dubuque answered with five straight points and took the game 81-55.

Walker led the Eagles with a game-high 15 points while Tobin followed with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds. Hill also chipped in with eight points. Dubuque shot 45.3 percent from the floor and 42.1 from three point range while the Eagles shot 31.5 percent from the floor and 25.0 percent from long range.

The Eagles will be in action again tomorrow at the Gabe Miller Tipoff Classic hosted by UW-Platteville. Edgewood College will play Loras College at 12:00 p.m. UW-Platteville will provide both live video and stats, with the links being found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
