Grace Williamson scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Alfred University to a 58-50 win over Hamilton College in the opening game of Buffalo State College's Betty Abgott Invitational on Nov. 18.
Harley Cleary added 21 points and six rebounds for the Saxons, and Kacey Kwiecien dished out a game-high eight assists.
Madie Harlem '13 posted a double-double for Hamilton (0-1 overall) with a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds. Kim Goidell '13 chipped in seven points and 11 rebounds, and Olivia Pimm '15 added seven points and nine rebounds in her first collegiate action.
Alfred (2-0) jumped out to an early 24-9 lead, but Hamilton used a 16-7 run to cut the Saxons' halftime lead to 31-25. The Saxons pushed their lead back up to 18 points with just over six minutes remaining, but a 12-1 run by the Continentals pulled them to within 52-45 with 1:35 remaining. Hamilton didn't get closer than the seven-point deficit down the stretch.
Alfred outscored Hamilton 28-10 in the paint despite being outrebounded 52-36. The Saxons shot 43 percent from the floor, while the Continentals shot just 24 percent.
Hamilton takes on Hilbert College in the consolation game at noon on Saturday, Nov. 19.
