FRANKLIN, Ind. – Albion College gave 10th-ranked DePauw University a tussle in their opening round game of the Franklin College Tip-Off Tournament. The Britons trailed by just three with less than eight minutes remaining, but Alex Gasaway scored on consecutive possessions to lift DePauw to a 59-48 victory.
Albion will meet North Park University in the tournament's consolation game at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Briton guard Tanner Johnson knocked down a 3-point basket to pull Albion within three at 41-38. Gasaway answered with a "three" on DePauw's possession and she tacked on a layup in transition.
Patty Rewa scored Albion's next two baskets as the Britons trailed by five, 47-42, with five minutes left, and Brett deBear's jumper kept the margin at five, 49-44, with three minutes left.
Ali Ross scored a pair of 3-point baskets in the final two minutes to lift DePauw to the 11-point win. Ross led the Tigers with 15 points and four assists, while Katie Aldrich and Gasaway finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Rewa led all players with 16 points and she pulled down eight rebounds. Nicole Dennis (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) finished with 10 points.
