Colonels pull away in second half, defeat Berry 87-74

The Centre women's basketball team moved to 2-0 on the season with an 87-74 victory over Berry College in the Country Hearth Inn/Lee's Famous Recipe Classic on Friday at Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky.

Senior guard Maggie Prewitt had a game-high 21 points to lead four Colonels in double figures, and Centre pulled away on an eight minute second half stretch in which it outscored Berry 25-9.

The surge began just after a pair of Danielle Sisk free throws cut Centre's lead to 46-44 at the 17:08 mark in the second half. Senior guard Maggie Prewitt (Mount Sterling, Ky.), who led all scorers with 21 points, scored eight during that run which put Centre up 71-55 with just over nine minutes to play. Centre would go on to push the lead as high as 21 points on two occasions before Berry chipped away in the closing minutes with the game already well in hand.

Until Centre's run, however, the game had been evenly matched. Berry led my as many as five points in the early going, and the teams traded baskets through most of a first half that had six lead changes and three ties. Centre finally took the lead for good on two Prewitt free throws at the 7:58 mark and led by as many as six before taking a 44-40 lead to the break.

Bridget Winstead (Franklin, Tenn.) shot 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and followed Prewitt in the scoring column for Centre with 16. Chelsea Benham (Taswell, Ind.) chipped in 12 while Paige Baechle added 10 with a team-high seven rebounds. Brittany Coughlan led Berry with 15 points while Sisk added 11.

Centre shot 48.4 percent (30-of-62) from the field to Berry's 37.1 (23-of-62) and made seven of 15 3-pointers while holding Berry to 7-of-30 shooting from long range. The Colonels also held a 41-31 rebounding advantage.

Centre will be back in action again Saturday in the Country Hearth Inn/Lee's Famous Recipe Classic when it hosts Rose-Hulman (0-1) at 7 p.m. Marian University (3-0), a 68-45 winner over Rose-Hulman in Friday's first game, will face Berry (1-1) at 5 p.m.
