UW-Oshkosh marked the final eight points of the game to earn a 53-48 comeback victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team on Friday (Nov. 19) in De Pere.
The Titans (3-0) trailed by three with 2:03 remaining. A Kelsey Myklebust (Jr. • Wisconsin Dells) lay-up tied the score at the 1:15 mark before UW-Oshkosh forced a turnover. With 36 seconds on the clock, Shelby Churchill (Sr. • Sheboygan) buried a jumper to take the lead for good. The win marked the second time in three games this season that UW-Oshkosh prevailed after trailing by double digits in the second half.
The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (0-1) held a 28-22 lead at halftime and took a 36-26 cushion on Miranda Shorter's lay-in. Sarah Stecker (Fr. • Menasha) converted back-to-back hoops to draw the Titans closer, eventually pulling within 39-35 at the 11:32 mark of the final period.
Megan Wenig (So. • Oshkosh) drained a three-pointer to obtain a three-point deficit. UW-Oshkosh then got a Laura Ebbens (Sr. • Appleton) bucket and Myklebust's free throw to trail, 44-43, with 5:05 remaining. The Crusaders' last points came on Brandy Dittert's two-pointer with 2:30 left.
The first five minutes of the game were tight, as Lindsay Eaton finished off a three-point play to tie the score at 9. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor followed with seven unanswered points, including Shorter's fast-break conversion, to lead 16-9 with 12:34 on the clock.
The margin fluctuated between three and seven points for the rest of the first period. The Titans got consecutive jump shots from Churchill and Wenig to make it 19-14. Becca Diedrich hit a mid-range attempt to make it a six-point game as neither squad scored in the 2:13 before intermission.
Churchill paced UW-Oshkosh with 10 points and five rebounds, while Diedrich totaled seven points and nine boards. Ebbens and Michelle Boeder (Sr. • Oshkosh) added seven points apiece for the Titans, who shot 33 percent (18-54) from the field, 1-of-12 three-pointers and 16-of-24 free throws.
The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor received game-highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds from Eaton, in addition to six points and five rebounds from Jenny Black. The Crusaders compiled 34 percent field goal shooting (19-56), 4-of-12 connections behind the arc and 6-of-11 efficiency at the foul line (55 percent).
UW-Oshkosh, which met the Crusaders for the first time, owned a 41-37 edge in rebounds. The Titans also committed fewer turnovers, 14-18.
UW-Oshkosh battles St. Norbert College on Saturday (Nov. 20) in De Pere.
