Top-Ranked Saints Fall to Defending Champions in NCAA Sweet 16

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The top-ranked Thomas More College women's basketball team fell, 72-53, to No. 12-ranked and defending champions Washington University-St. Louis tonight (Friday, March 11, 2011) in a NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship Tournament Sectional Semifinal game at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

With the loss, the Saints end the season at 30-1.  With the win, the Bears improve to 23-5 and advance to the sectional finals tomorrow night, where they will play The University of Chicago.

Thomas More jumped out to a 4-0 lead when senior forward Amy Stultz (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) made lay-up with 18:53 to play in the game.  WashU answered with a 5-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Alex Hoover to take a 5-4 lead with 16:27 to play in the half.  The Saints responded with a 6-0 run to take a 10-5 lead with 15:51 to play in the opening half when freshman guard Katie Kitchen (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) made a three-pointer at the 15:51 mark of the half.  Hoover capped a WashU 6-0 run to retake the lead at 11-10 with 13:44 to play in the first half.  Thomas More put together a 10-2 run to take a 20-13 lead with 8:56 to play in the first half when sophomore guard Allison Long (Hebron, Ky./Conner) made a free-throw.  The Bears responded with a 15-5 run to take a 28-27 lead with 1:49 to play in the half when Dani Hoover made a jumper.  Freshman forward Moriah Corey (Louisville, Ky./Butler) made two free-throws with 1:25 to play in the half to cut the lead to 28-27 at halftime.

WashU opened the second half on a 16-7 run to extend the lead to 44-34 when Kathryn Berger made a jumper with 13:01 to play in the game.  The Saints came right back with a 5-0 run capped by a three-point play by senior center Nicole Dickman (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) to cut the lead to 44-39 with 11:08 to play in the game.  WashU closed out the game on a 28-14 run for the 72-53 final score.

Long led the Saints in scoring with a game-high-tying 14 points, while Stultz added 12.  Dickman led the team on the boards with seven rebounds, while Long led the team in assists with five and sophomore forward/center Katie Kees (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) led the team in blocks with three.
