NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 11th ranked Christopher Newport University Captains (26-3) advanced to the NCAA Second Round with an 81-52 victory over York College of Pennsylvania (16-13) tonight, led by a record-setting performance from senior Chelsie Schweers. The Captains will host Johns Hopkins (22-5) in the second round on Saturday at 5:00 pm.
Schweers scored a Christopher Newport NCAA record 33 points in the win and became the Captains all-time leading scorer in school history, including men's and women's basketball. She passed assistant coach Lamont Strothers' previous mark of 2,709 and finished the game with 2,728. Her 33-point performance tied Misty Hart's NCAA-high, set in 1998.
The Chesapeake native did not stop there, though, as she knocked down another CNU record seven three-pointers in NCAA play, and tied the All-Time NCAA Women's Basketball record for all divisions, with 397. She ties Melissa Beyruti of Kean University atop the list as the NCAA women's basketball all-time best three-point shooters.
Schweers wasted little time in the first record, scoring 22 first-half points to lead CNU to a big lead at intermission, 49-25. She added four rebounds, three assists and three steals in the half, while Jessica Moore also poured in six points, grabbed five rebounds and dished four assists.
The Captains lead got to as many as 32 in the second half, as Schweers knocked down her seventh and final three-pointer in the game. She finished the game 7-of-15 from long range, besting her own team record of six in postseason play.
Senior Barbara Davis worked hard in the win and finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks, assists and steals in the game. Moore finished with a team-high 10 rebounds, while junior guard Kimmy Hopkins added eight points.
The Spartans had two players in double figures and were led by Kristen Haley's double-double. Haley finished with 11 points and a game-hiigh 11 rebounds, while also blocking two shots. Kelsey Murphy led the team in scoring with 14 points, knocking down for three-pointers.
Christopher Newport held a decided 38-12 advantage in the paint, and also scored 24 second-chance points to to York's seven. The CNU defense forced 16 turnovers and held the Spartans to 36.5% shooting.
CNU advances to the NCAA Second Round for the second consecutive season and will face off against Johns Hopkins in the Freeman Center tomorrow. Tip is set for 5:00 pm as the Captains take on the Blue Jays for just the second time in program history. Hopkins won the first game back in the 2002-03 season, 77-56.
