ATLANTA - All five starters scored in double figures as the University of Rochester defeated Emory University, 81-72, on Saturday afternoon.
Melissa Alwardt had her ninth career double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. She hit six of 10 outside the arc. Laney Ming had 16 points, including a nine-of-nine performance from the foul line. She handed out six assists. Jodie Luther had 15 points. Madeline Korber had 10 points as did Jackie Walker (who added four assists).
Savannah Morgan led Emory with 19 points. Hannah Lilly had 15 points. Emory finished its season at 11-14 overall, 4-10 in the UAA.
Rochester's victory hopefully boosts its resume for a Pool C bid to the tournament. The Yellowjackets are 20-5 overall, 10-4 in the UAA. Rochester reached 20 victories for the sixth straight year and the 10 wins are the second highest UAA victory total in school history.
The Yellowjackets jumped in front by 15 at halftime (42-27) thanks in part to solid ballhandling. Emory's pressure paid off in the second half, forcing 14 Rochester giveaways in the first 15 minutes. The Eagles cut what was a double-figure deficit down to 61-59 on a Morgan jumper from just outside the lane with just under 5:30 left. Alwardt sank a trey out of the right corner for a 64-59 lead, but Misha Jackson made back to back layups, getting the Eagles within one, 64-63, with 4:00 left.
Ming sank a three-pointer out of the right corner on the next trip down and eventually added two free throws for a 69-63 lead with 1:54 left. Morgan's bucket got Emory within four (69-65) but Alwardt sank back to back three-pointers, one from the right corner, out on left wing, to make it 75-65 in favor of Rochester with 41 seconds left. The Yellowjackets made four free throws in the last 32 seconds to wrap up the win.
Now, the Yellowjackets wait. The NCAA tournament field will be released on Monday at 3 pm Eastern time.
