ALBION, Mich. – Albion College advanced to the semifinal round of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament for the eighth time in the Doreen Carden era with a 57-51 victory over Olivet College. Carden, who is in her 10th year as Albion's coach, will take a 173-80 career mark into a Thursday night game with Calvin College.
Albion trailed for only 23 seconds as Brett de Bear scored a basket and Patty Rewa added an old-fashioned 3-point play to give the Britons the lead for good at 5-2. Kelsey Effner, Melissa Shaw and Tanner Johnson all made shots as Albion expanded its lead to 12-6 midway through the first half. Albion went on to hold a 27-20 lead at halftime.
De Bear's "three" gave Albion its largest lead of the night, 41-31, with 11 ½ minutes to play, but the Britons let Olivet hang around far too long. Olivet pulled to within three, 51-48, on Caitlin Thilo's 3-point play with a minute left. Rewa bailed out the Britons by burying a jumper on Albion's next possession.
Rewa led all players with 19 points and eight rebounds. De Bear made three shots from behind the arc and established a career-high of 17.
Thilo was Olivet's only double figure scorer, finishing with 11.
