Rangers Close Season on High Note

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (February 19, 2011) - The Rangers finished the 2010-11 season with a 61-51 road win over Merchant Marine this afternoon. Junior Danielle Barber  (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Twp.) led all scorers with 22 points.

Drew (11-14, 4-10 Landmark) was in a back and forth battle with the Mariners over the first 12 minutes but was able to create separation with a late first half run. Barber netted 13 of her 22 in the first half of play and helped spark 9-1 run to close the frame.

Merchant Marine (7-18, 0-14) would stage one more comeback in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. The Mariners were led by forward Jenay Weathers who finished the game with a double-double. Weathers pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end. She finished the game with a team-high 15 points.

The Mariner defense clamped down and held the Rangers to only three points in the first 8:02 of play. In the meantime Merchant Marine would cut the Drew lead down to 1 at the 13:52 mark on Alicen Heinrich's sixth-straight point.

After exchanging baskets the Ranger offense would finally get back into gear by scoring the games next seven points. With the lead back up to nine the Rangers would not allow the Mariners to get any closer than five for the rest of the game.

Two other players were in double figures for the Rangers. Victoria Ault (Middletown, N.J./Mater Dei) added 12 points including a 6-for-6 effort from the free throw line. The Rangers as a team went 12-of-14 from the charity stripe. Jen Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union City) was the other player over the 10-point mark, totaling 11 on the afternoon.

Senior Jess Reid (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) played in her final regular season game in a Ranger uniform and led the team with eight rebounds. Reid drew a total of four offensive charges on the day, halting a few Mariner runs and getting Merchant Marine's forwards into foul trouble.
