WINCHESTER, Va. – Methodist University earned a sweep of the women's basketball season series with Shenandoah University by downing the Hornets 66-62 in the regular season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon.

The win for Methodist (14-11, 12-6 USA South), coupled with Averett's victory over Mary Baldwin, means that MU will host Averett on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the USA South Conference Tournament.

Shenandoah (12-13, 8-10) could have claimed Averett's spot as the fifth-seed with a win, but will now take on No. 3 Ferrum on Tuesday as the tournament sixth seed.

This game is scheduled for 5:30.

SU, which trailed throughout the second half, made things interesting in the waning moments of the contest by cutting the deficit to one point with 53 seconds remaining.

Trailing 63-57, Sierra Edwards hit two free throws followed by a Mandy Johnston 3-pointer to bring SU to within one.

Unfortunately for the Shingleton Gymnasium crowd, Becca Rimes was 2 for 2 on the Monarchs next trip down the floor and Shenandoah would get no closer than three points the rest of the way.

A potential game-tying 3-pointer from Ashleigh Council missed left with 11 seconds left and after Crystal Williams was forced to foul to stop the clock on the ensuing rebound, MU clinched the game with one of two from the line by Jackie Lyles.

Edwards led all scorers with 24 points and Johnston added 13 for the Hornets.

Dawn Sanderson had 16 and Iesha Hayes 15 for the victors.

Methodist won the battle of the glass 44-30.
