Lady Mavs Can't Hold On; Share AMCC Title

More news about: Medaille

(Pittsburgh, PA) – The 19th ranked Medaille Lady Mavericks went to La Roche knowing that the winner of today's game would earn the right to host the AMCC championship tournament. It was a game that saw nine lead changes, and eight ties, the Lady Mavs missed two three-pointers late and fell to the Redhawks (61-58).

Senior Amanda Sahhar (OrchardPark, NY/Orchard Park) scored a team high (21) points on (8-12) shooting, to go along with (9) rebounds, and (1) block to lead Medaille as they will share the AMCC Regular Season title with La Roche.  For Medaille it is their fifth title in the past six seasons.  Freshman Bianca Smiley (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) also added (17) points as the Lady Mavs dropped just their second conference game in the past two seasons.

The first half would be a sea-saw battle, with (4) ties and (4) lead changes. La Roche (21-4, 15-2), would hold the edge for much of the first half, leading by as many as seven at the (7:26) mark. However, Medaille would chip away at La Roche's lead, and take the lead themselves, going into halftime, on a layup from junior Tanisha Travis (Rochester, NY/Fairpoirt), her only field goal of the game.

The second half would be just as topsy-turvy as the first, this time with the Lady Mavericks controlling much of the half, leading by as many as eight points with just (7:13) remaining in the contest. That's when freshman Jessica Pitts took over for the Lady Redhawks, scoring (16) of La Roche's last (21) points, including the go-ahead free-throws at the (00:44) second mark.

The loss drops the Lady Mavericks to (21-3) overall, and (16-2) in AMCC play. Medaille will go into the AMCC tournament with a (#2) seed, and will face the winner of the (#3/#6) matchup on Friday (2/25) on the campus of La Roche College at 8:00pm.
