Wesley Wins on Senior Night

More news about: Wesley

DOVER, Del. - On a night when Wesley College honored its seniors, the trio combined for all but 14 of Wesley's points in a key 54-50 win over York (Pa.).

Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) grabbed 16 rebounds to become the first player in school history to reach 1,000 in her career.

With Owens owning the backboards, it freed up Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) to score a game-high 22 points, including four threes.

The win moved the Wolverines into a tie for third place with York.

The Spartans (12-12, 9-6 CAC) trailed just 20-19 after a three by Kelsey Murphy with 7:48 left in the half.  A pair of free throws by Owens and a jumper by Jazmine Miller (Dover, Del./Dover) preceded 10 consecutive point by Boyd as the Wolverines (14-10, 9-6 CAC) reeled off a 14-0 run to take a 34-19 lead.  Brittany Hicks broke the run with two free throws that cut the lead to 13 points at the half.

Wesley led by the same number after a bucket by Owens made it 49-36 with 5:12 left in the game.  The Spartans were far from out of it, however, embarking on a 14-3 run that cut the score to 52-50 with 33 seconds left after a lay up by Hicks.

York was forced to foul, but Miller made just one of two.  The Spartans had two more chances, but a missed three and a turnover on an inbounds pass allowed Owens to ice the game from the line with six seconds left.

Owens added a dozen points for her 10th double-double of the season.  She also blocked three shots.

Miller added 10 points, nine rebounds and four steals.

Hicks was the only Spartan in double digits with 18 points and matched Murphy for the team-high with nine rebounds.

The Wolverines racked up 14 steals on night.

In terms of the upcoming CAC tournametn, if Marymount (Va.) loses Saturday, a win by either (or both) Wesley (at Mary Washington) or York (home vs. Salisbury) will create a tie for second place.

If MU is tied with Wesley, the Saints have the advantage because the teams split their season series, but MU has an early-season win over Mary Washington to break the tie.

In a three-way tie between the Wolverines, Saints and Spartans, York gains the advantage with a 3-1 record against MU and Wesley while Wesley would be 2-2 in that grouping and Marymount would be 1-3.

The Wolverines will look for their eighth straight win when they travel to first place Mary Washington on Saturday, February 19.

Note:  In addition to a pregame ceremony to honor the team's three seniors - Boyd, Owens and Allison Beddia (New Castle, Del./Delcastle) - the Wolverines retired the number of the program's all-time leading scorer T'Neisha Turner at halftime.
