Rochester, N.Y., February 13, 2011 – The No. 6 Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team's nine-game winning streak came to an end with a 71-61 setback at No. 16 University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon at The Palestra in Rochester, N.Y.

Senior Kathryn Berger led all scorers with 18 points and junior Dani Hoover added 11 but the Bears were unable to fully recover from a slow shooting start in the first half that left them trailing by nine at the half.

Washington University trailed by 13 points when Rochester's Melissa Alwardt converted a free-throw at the 10:44 mark of the second half to make the score 55-42, but clamped down defensively from that point, limiting the Yellowjackets to just one field goal over a span of 8:18.

Dani Hoover hit a running basket through the lane as she was fouled and made the free-throw to pull the Bears within six, 59-53, but Rochester's Jodie Luther answered with a lay-up of her own on the other end to put the Yellowjackets back up by eight and Washington University was unable to pull any closer down the stretch.

Rochester shot 46.3 percent from the field in the win and was led by Luther's 17 points, 13 of which came in the second half. Alwardt (13), Kristyn Wright (12) and Madeline Korber (11) also scored in double figures for Rochester and the Yellowjackets shot 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) from the line.

Despite a slow start offensively Washington University found itself with a one-point lead when Berger converted a three-point play with just over 4:30 remaining in the first half. Senior point guard Alex Hoover found Berger with a long outlet pass for a fast-break opportunity and Berger made the lay-up as she was fouled, sinking the ensuing free throw.

Berger's basket ended a field goal drought of over five minutes for Washington University, but the Bears' offensive woes would continue as the period wound down. Rochester concluded the first half on a 9-0 run over the final 2:45 of play, with Alwardt scoring the final five points of the period.

Berger scored 13 points in the first half and was 5-of-11 from the field, but Washington University shot just 27.6 percent (8-of-29) from the field as a team. Rochester shot 42.4 percent with one more three pointer and the Yellowjackets held a 10-4 edge in the paint to create their nine-point halftime cushion.

Bear Notebook: Washington University has now outrebounded 21-of-22 opponents this season … Washington U. and Rochester have split their regular season series in each of the past four seasons, protecting home court advantage in each game … Washington U. now leads the all-time series against Rochester 38-11.
