St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior forward Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) matched her career-high of 23 points but the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team still fell short Saturday afternoon as Wesley College came away with a 62-59 Capital Athletic Conference victory to split the series with the Seahawks.
Roberts knotted the contest at 54-54 with 3:04 left in the game, capping a 15-2 run in a 3:20-minute span to erase a 13-point deficit. Wesley then outscored the Seahawks, 8-2, in the last two minutes for a 62-56 advantage with eight seconds on the clock. As the buzzer went off, Roberts drilled her third three-point shot of the afternoon from about 25 feet out for the 62-59 final.
The loss put a damper on Senior Day for Roberts who was recognized for her years of service to the Seahawk women's basketball program before the start of the game. She has helped the Seahawks to 47 wins, including 32 league wins.
Roberts equaled her career-best for three-point field goals with three while going six-of-seven from the free throw line. First-year forward Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) recorded her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Despite the loss today, St. Mary's (11-12, 7-8 CAC) is still in the chase for a playoff spot. The Seahawks still remain sixth in the conference standings. St. Mary's will travel to Frostburg, Maryland next Saturday, February 19 to take on league newcomer, Frostburg State University, in the regular-season finale. Tip-off is at 2:00 pm. Frostburg State (12-11, 9-5 CAC) is currently in a three-way tie for second with Marymount (Va.) University and York (Pa.) College.
Wesley (13-10, 8-6 CAC) broke an 8-8 draw in the first half with a 17-8 run in a near 12-minute span and never looked back as the Wolverines held a 29-20 advantage at the break. Wesley's sophomore guard Jazmine Miller (Dover, Del./Dover), who finished the afternoon with 19 points off the bench, tallied 11 first-half points to lead all scorers.
This week's CAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week, senior forward Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) notched a double-double for the Wolverines on game-highs of 26 points and 11 boards.
The Seahawks trimmed the lead to 31-30 with a 10-2 run to start the second half. Roberts notched six points in the run before Wesley responded with a 15-5 run to augment its lead to double digits with 8:54 remaining in the game.
