Three's Company: Overwhelming Effort by Lightning Trio Leads to Easy Win

More news about: Lehman

When Louvinia Hayes has her game going, the Lightning is tough to beat.

When Hayes and Amanda De La Cruz are both clicking, toppling the Lightning is no easy task.

But when Hayes, De La Cruz and Jaleesa Gordon are all thriving, it is virtually impossible, a fact the John Jay Bloodhounds found out on Saturday afternoon as they were trampled by the visiting Lightning 99-66.

Lehman's multi-talented trio combined for 79 points and 41 rebounds on the day and helped to essentially end the game before the Bloodhounds even knew what hit them as the team stormed out to a 20-2 lead just six minutes into the contest. In fact no Lightning player other than Hayes, De La Cruz or Gordon entered the scorebook until Paula Robinson hit a jumper with 5:18 remaining in the half to put Lehman up 35-17. The Bloodhounds inability to take care of the ball played a part in their undoing as well as they turned the ball over nine times during the Lightning's opening six minute outburst.

Robinson tallied one more basket and Taniefa Taylor would also enter the scoring column just before the half as Lehman reached the break leading comfortably 50-33.

With the game in complete control, the only remaining storylines as time wound down were whether Hayes would duplicate her season high of 40 points – also scored against John Jay back on January 7 – and whether De La Cruz would register the Lightning's first triple double of the season.

The answer on both fronts was no, though both came close. Hayes ended the day with 37 points, while also grabbing 13 rebounds, and De La Cruz finished three assists shy of a triple double with 22 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists. Completing the overpowering Lightning triumvirate, Gordon posted her sixth straight double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds and also added six blocked shots.

Its fifth consecutive win overall in the books, Lehman has now wrapped up the City University of New York Athletic Conference portion of its schedule and sits at 9-4 in the conference. The win also marks the end of Hayes' regular season domination of the CUNYAC, as she finishes with a 25.0 points-per-game average against the other nine teams. Not to be forgotten, her backcourt mate De La Cruz finished the year averaging 20.3 points-per-game in conference.

The team will travel to Newburgh on Sunday to face Mount St. Mary before returning home for its regular season finale on Tuesday against Rutgers-Newark.
