BEXLEY, OHIO –  Freshman forward Jessica Lairson (Louisville) and sophomore forward Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) each scored 15 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team  defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University, 79-64, today (Saturday, February 12, 2011) in the Capital Center in Columbus.

With its win, B-W improved to 17-6 overall and 12-4 in the OAC to remain in second place all alone. In addition to Lairson and Carpenter, senior 2-time All-OAC guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) had 12 points. With its loss, Capital is now 14-8 overall and 9-7 in the OAC and ended a three-game winning streak. The Crusaders were led by freshman forward Jamie Caton's game-high 19 points.

With her 12 points today, Schroeder now has 1,335 career points to rank third all-time, and she needs 45 points more to surpass B-W Hall of Famer Debbie Crider for second place. Crider scored 1,379 career points.

In the first half, Capital jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the 18:26 mark when Ladrach made a layup. After B-W junior forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/ St. Mary's Central Catholic) made a jumper, the Crusaders scored the next five points to increase their lead to 8-2 at 16:41 when junior forward Hilary Kuhns made a three-pointer. Then, after Yellow Jacket freshman forward Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin/ Columbian) made a layup, Capital scored the next four points and led by eight points at 12-4 when Caton made two foul shots.

B-W came back to outscore the Crusaders 14-7 to close to 19-18 with 7:02 left when senior guard Ali Stack (Vermilion/ Firelands) made a layup. Undaunted, the Crusaders went on a 9-3 run to rebuild a seven-point advantage at 28-21 when sophomore guard Rebekah Will made a layup at 3:44. B-W and Capital traded baskets with B-W scoring last when Lairson grabbed an offensive rebound and scored at the first half buzzer with the Crusaders winning, 32-27.

In the second half, B-W scored the first basket when Lairson made a layup at 19:36 to close to 32-29. The Yellow Jackets finally tied the score at 35-35 at 17:59 when sophomore point guard Rachel Rossman (Olmsted Falls) made a layup. The game was tied at 37-37, 41-41, 46-46 and 48-48 before Capital grabbed a four-point lead at 52-48 with 10:30 left when Kuhns made a jump shot.  B-W came right back to tie it at 52-52 with 9:09 left when Schroeder  made two foul shots.

The Yellow Jackets finally grabbed the lead at 55-52 and increased its run to seven straight points when Carpenter canned a three-pointer. After Capital closed to 55-54, B-W went on a 20-7 run to build its lead to 14 points at 75-61 when Carpenter made a layup. The lead greww to 15 points at 77-62 when Stack made two more foul shots.  

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, February 16, when they travel to Alliance to play OAC arch-rival the University of Mount Union in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex at 7:30 p.m.  In addition, fans can listen to all of the action on either campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, or via the WBWC Internet web site at www.wbwc.com.

Next Saturday, Feb. 19, the B-W women and men host Ohio Northern University in a doubleheader in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center. That twinbill will be taped and televised by SportsTime Ohio. The women tipoff at 2:00 p.m. and the men at 4:00 p.m.
