Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's women's basketball team defeated visiting Hood 58-51 in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Saints move back into a three-way tie for second place in the league standings and are in play for a first round bye in the CAC Tournament.
Celebrating 'Senior Day' in the Verizon Sports Arena, Marymount's (11-9, 9-5 CAC) trio of four-year letterwinners paced the victory. Forwards Maame Amponsah and Beth Wiggins both posted double-doubles while Amanda Billy added 13 points. Amponsah led all scorers with 16 points to go with 12 rebounds while Wiggins chipped in 11 points, 10 boards and seven assists.
Billy also became the Saints' all-time leader in career three-pointers, nailing a pair of trifectas in the games. Entering the action with 176 triples, she trailed former MU standout and current head coach Ashlee Courter by just one three-pointer. Billy tied the record with six minutes to play in the first half and set the mark as part of a four-point play with a minute remaining in the stanza.
A close first half saw Marymount take multiple-possession leads only to see the Blazers (7-15, 2-13 CAC) comeback to pull within a field goal each time. The Saints wrapped up the opening frame on a 7-0 run to take a 27-18 lead going into the break.
Coming out of halftime, the Saints pushed their lead to double-figures and by as much as 19 with eight minutes to play. Hood would begin to chip away at the MU lead but couldn't get within seven points the rest of the way.
Allyson Lethbridge led the Blazers with 13 points while Emily Maerz added 11.
Marymount returns to the hardwood on Wednesday as it hosts Frostburg State in CAC action. The contest is the second Pink Zone game of the season and the final home game for the Saints. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game.
