Brooklyn Finishes 11-2 In Conference Play; Defeat Staten Island 82-59

Staten Island, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team defeated the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island earlier tonight, by a score of 82-59, at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center in the 2010-2011 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) season finale for both teams.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 15-9 overall on the year and 11-2 in conference play. BC will also enter the 2011 CUNYAC Tournament as the #2 seed as they will host the Quarterfinals round on Saturday, February 19th. Opponent will be determined at a later date. With the loss, CSI falls to 8-15 overall and 6-7 in league play.

The Bulldogs took control of the game early, jumping out to an 11-3 advantage through the first 3:41 of the game. Brooklyn would build their lead to as many as 19 on a number of occasions, heading into halftime up 43-24. As a team, the visiting Bulldogs shot nearly 50% from the field in the opening half, going 18-for-37 (48.6%) from the floor, including connecting on 5-for-14 from three. Brooklyn's defense held CSI to 28.1% (9-for-32) shooting from the field in the first stanza.

BC continued to dominate the game in the second half as the Bulldog's advantage never dipped below double digits. Brooklyn would push their lead to as many as 31 on a few occasions, as the visiting Bulldogs would go on to cruise to the 82-59 victory.

For the game, the Bulldogs shot 49.3% (34-for-69) from the field, compared to the Dolphins shooting 33.3% (24-for-72) from the field. Brooklyn also controlled the battle of the glass, outrebounding CSI, 49-37.

Staten Island native junior Lauren Plagainos led the way for Brooklyn netting 16 points, going 4-for-11 from beyond the arc. Classmate Justine O'Callahan also dropped in 16 points to go along with nine rebounds. Senior Elisha Raiford filled up the stat sheet recording a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, to go along with eight assists and five steals. Classmate Ariel Smith chipped in with 11 points, while dishing out seven assists.

CSI had a pair of players finish the night with double-doubles, as Allie Shanahan had 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Katelyn Hepworth had 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Brooklyn will be back in action on Wednesday, February 16th, as the Bulldogs will close out the regular season against SUNY College at Old Westbury at the West Quad Center Gym. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 pm.

Seniors Raiford, Smith, Ashley Allen and Amber Gordon will all be honored prior to the start of the game as part of Senior Day celebrations. Head Coach Alex Lang, who's been at the helm of the BC Women's Basketball program since the 2002-2003 season will look to make some history on Wednesday night, as he is currently one win shy of 100 for his career.
