Macalester knocked No. 24-ranked St. Benedict out of first place in the MIAC standings, getting double-doubles from Majra Mucic (Sr., Zenica, Bosnia / St. Louis Park – Minn.) and Holly Schiedermayer (Jr., Waupaca, Wis.) to upset the Blazers 72-58 in St. Joseph.  Mucic finished with 17 points and 16 rebounds, while Schiedermayer contributed 16 points and 10 boards.  This pair out-rebounded the entire CSB team.

The Scots end a 27-game losing streak to the traditional MIAC powers as Macalester knocks off St. Ben's for the first time since December 1995.

Macalester is 7-3 over its last 10 games and has worked itself into contention for a spot in the six-team MIAC playoffs.  With three regular-season contests remaining, the Scots (9-10 in the league) are fighting for one of the final two spots with Bethel (9-9), Hamline (9-10), St. Mary's (8-10) and St. Olaf (8-11).  The team's next game is Saturday (Feb. 12) with co-sixth place team Hamline.
In addition to getting big games from Mucic and Schiedermayer in the front court, the Scots received 13 points from Jessica Rene (Jr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial), who was 3-for-4 on three-pointers, and nine apiece from Kyanna Jones (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) and Shannon Rene (Jr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial).  Five players handed out three assists each, while Mucic led the defense with four steals.

Mac out-rebounded the Blazers 40-24 and surrendered just four second chance points.

St. Benedict, which now trails St. Thomas by a game in the MIAC standings, was led by Amy Stifter with 12 points and Laura Canton with 10.

Macalester's home 1 p.m. game Saturday with Hamline is Senior Day and Pink Zone Day. This event helps raise money and awareness to support the Kay Yow Foundation and the fight against breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and make a donation to the cause.
