ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The University of Rochester closed the first half on a 20-2 run and went on to defeat Brandeis University, 80-51, at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
The win boosted Rochester's record to 16-4 overall, 6-3 in the University Athletic Association. Melissa Alwardt scored 16 points for the Yellowjackets, including four three-point goals. Kristyn Wright had 12 points and four assists. Jodie Luther scored 10 points.
Mia DePalo scored 14 points to lead Brandeis. Morgan Kendrew had 11 points. DePalo sank four of Brandeis' six three-point goals. The Judges are 10-10 overall, 2-7 in the UAA.
Good shooting early in the game helped Brandeis jump to a seven-point lead, 13-6. A jumpshot by Amber Strodthoff put Brandeis up, 22-17, with 8:24 left in the half.
Michelle Ketcham hit a three-pointer less than a minute later to ignite the 20-2 burst. Wright scored five of her points in the run, including a three-pointer. Luther had four points. Seven Yellowjackets contributed. Rochester led, 37-24, at halftime.
Rochester shot 49.1% from the floor (28 of 57) and 47.1% from outside the arc (eight of 17). The Yellowjackets made 16 of 18 from the line. Amy Woods was eight for eight.
Rochester had nine steals on 17 Brandeis turnovers and scored 22 points from the giveaways. The Yellowjackets outscored Brandeis, 18-0, in second chance points.
