NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The senior class led the way for 10th ranked Christopher Newport University, as the Captains raced past North Carolina Wesleyan (4-16, 2-12) for their 33rd straight home win, 83-61. Senior guard Chelsie Schweers poured in 30 points, while classmates Barbara Davis and Jessica Moore each had a double-double, pushing CNU to 19-2 overall this season, 13-1 in USA South action.
Christopher Newport opened up a 23-point lead at halftime, led by Schweers' 20 points. The senior Captain knocked down four three's in the first and was 7-12 from the floor. Up front, both Davis and Moore scored six points, while the two combined for nine rebounds.
CNU shot 51.4% from the field in the first half, while North Carolina Wesleyan managed just 33.3% on 9-27 shooting. The Captains forced 10 first half turnovers, leading to 14 points.
The second half would see a much different Bishops team take the floor, as the road team outscsored CNU in the second half, 37-36. Defensively, North Carolina Wesleyan improved, forcing 10 second half turnovers and pulling back within 13 just 5:13 into the second half.
CNU responded, though, quickly posting a 10-0 run over the next three minutes. The Bishops would get no closer than 19 the rest of the way.
Schweers scored 30 points in the game, going 10-11 from the free-throw line and adding five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. Davis' filled the stat sheet again, scoring 10 points while grabbing 11 boards and swatting five shots. Moore's double-double came as she scored 12 points and added 10 rebounds, assisted on four shots and had one steal.
Eight of the nine CNU players that saw action in today's game scored, and four different players dished out at least four assists. The Captains shot 46.2% from the field in the game on 30-65 shooting.
Wesleyan was led by A'leisha Henderson, with 12 points, while Samantha Urquhart added 11 in the loss. Desiree Driver and Tiffany Bell each had nine points, while Tionne Evans led the way with five rebounds. The Battling Bishops shot 36.1% from the field on 22-61 shooting.
Christopher Newport returns to action next weekend, as the 10th ranked Captains take on Averett and Ferrum on the road. CNU will play Averett on February 12 at 2:00 pm, followed by a game at Ferrum on Sunday, February 13 at 2:00 pm.
