CONWAY, Ark. (Feb. 4) -- Hendrix College drained seven 3-pointers in the first half to overcome an early six-point deficit and the Warriors got key performances from the bench to earn a 75-59 win over Southwestern University on Friday afternoon at Grove Gymnasium.
Hendrix (11-9, 8-4 SCAC) struggled to break an early full-court press and three turnovers turned into a 6-0 deficit after just 1:28 of action. The Warriors settled down and started finding their stroke from distance with five 3-pointers in a seven minute span, giving Hendrix a 20-13 lead with 10:16 left in the first half.
Southwestern narrowed its deficit to five points with 7:32 left before intermission, however, that is as close as the Pirates would come the rest of the way. Hendrix finished the opening half with a 20-7 run to take a 45-27 lead into the locker room.
The Pirates clawed their way back to within seven points, 66-59, with 3:40 remaining in regulation. Hendrix resonded and held Southwestern scoreless the rest of the way with a 9-0 run to close the game.
Hendrix dominated the glass by outrebounding Southwestern, 51-27. The Warriors' bench outscored the Pirates, 37-10, and Hendrix owned a 13-8 advantage in second-chance points. Southwestern won the war down low with a 30-24 lead in the paint.
Junior Katy Ashley-Pauley was just two points off her season-high mark with 15 points and matched her career-high mark with eight assists. Junior Samantha Devlin posted her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Caty Hensy added nine points and 10 rebounds. Junior Anna Roane finished with 15 points and senior Wyvonne Hawkins tallied a season-high 11 points.
First year Chelsea Leeder and senior Staley Mullins led Southwestern with 13 points apiece, while senior Anna Fareed collected 12 points and seven assists.
Hendrix improves to 25-10 all-time against Southwestern. The Warriors will now host Trinity University on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT.
