Kean Women Defeat Rowan, 81-66

UNION, N.J. (2/5/11) – Senior Tiffany Patrick recorded a double-double with game-highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Kean University women's basketball team to an 81-66 win over visiting Rowan University in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Patrick added three blocks to lead the No. 3 Cougars (18-3, 9-1 NJAC), who rebounded from their first conference loss of the season. 

Junior Lauren Gregg led the Profs (11-8, 6-3 NJAC) with 22 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double.

After Rowan scored the first four points of the game and held a 6-2 lead in the early minutes following back-to-back lay-ups by Gregg, the Cougars scored eight straight points to take a 10-6 lead on a lay-up by sophomore Naimah Clemons less than four minutes into the contest.

The Profs would use five straight points to take their last lead of the game at 13-12 after a three-pointer by Gregg, before the Cougars used a 7-0 run to build a 21-14 lead with just under 13 minutes remaining on a lay-up by senior Angelica Bermudez.

Kean extended the lead out to double-digits at 35-25 on a lay-up by sophomore Simone Smith en-route to taking an eight point lead at the break at 35-27. 

Patrick had 10 points and six rebounds in the opening half, while rookie Emily Cristaldi scored eight points and had two assists for Kean in the first half. 

Gregg scored nine points and had five rebounds, two blocks and two steals in the first half.

Rowan opened the second half with an 8-2 run to pull within 37-35 less than three minutes into the half and again trailed at 39-37 before the Cougars reeled off nine unanswered point to extend the lead back to double-digits at 48-37 with 13:32 remaining.

A three-pointer by Kean junior Brittany Powell pushed the Cougar lead to 13 points midway through the half and after Rowan pulled back to within seven points on a pair of occasions, the Cougars pushed the lead out to double-figures for good.  A pair of Clemons free throws gave Kean its largest lead at 21 points with the 72-51 lead, however Rowan had one final run with nine straight points to pull back to 12 points at 72-60 before the Cougars pulled back away for the 15-point victory.

Clemons had a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists, while adding five steals and five rebounds, while Cristaldi and Smith chipped in with 12 points and 11 points, respectively.

Junior forward Brittany Baum and senior guard Gina Catanzariti each had 17 points for Rowan.

Kean hosts Richard Stockton College on Monday, February 7, in a NJAC doubleheader.  The women tip-off at 6 p.m.
