Pirate Women Fall in Overtime at Puget Sound

More news about: Whitworth

TACOMA, Wash. -- Emily Guthrie hit a long three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation to tie the game, but visiting Whitworth could not keep the momentum going in overtime of a 69-60 loss at Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Friday night.

The Loggers outscored the Pirates 14-5 in the extra period to improve to 16-4 overall and 9-2 in the NWC, staying in contention for the conference title.

Whitworth (10-10, 6-5), upset winners over UPS in January, could not complete the season sweep. The Pirates are tied for fourth place in the NWC after Whitman defeated Pacific Lutheran in double overtime on Friday night.

Whitworth took its largest lead of the game when Guthrie's lay up gave the Pirates a 20-15 lead late in the first half. But UPS outscored the Bucs 6-0 over the final three minutes of the half to take a 21-20 lead into the break.

Kelsey McKinnis scored inside to give the Loggers a 28-23 lead early in the second half. But Whitworth would rally over the next several minutes to take a 40-36 lead after a three-pointer by Lauren Picha and a basket by Emily Travis.

Jocelyn Riordan converted a three-point play with 36 seconds left to give UPS a 53-50 lead, but Picha answered with a jumper. After Taylor Jones converted two free throws to increase the lead back to three with :12 to play, Guthrie hit her three to tie the game 55-55 and force overtime.

But the Pirates could not keep it going in the extra period. Whitworth missed its first five shots of overtime while UPS was building a 64-55 lead with less than two minutes to play. Lexi Belcher finally broke the scoreless streak for the Bucs.

Belcher led Whitworth with 17 points and six rebounds. Picha added 12 points and Travis finished with 11 points. Whitworth had a slight 47-46 edge in rebounds, but committed 24 turnovers to only 16 for UPS.

Riordan led the Loggers with 21 points and eight rebounds, McKinnis finished with 20 points and Jones scored 12.

Whitworth will play at Pacific Lutheran on Saturday while UPS hosts Whitman.
