ALFRED, NY — Visiting Stevens defeated the Alfred University women's basketball team, 63-45, Friday evening in an Empire 8 contest at the McLane Center. The loss spoiled an evening in which AU senior guard Lyndsay Murphy scored her 1,000th point in an Alfred uniform.

Stevens (15-3, 8-2 Empire 8) shot 41 percent from the floor to 24 percent for Alfred and forced 24 AU turnovers. The visitors held a 29-18 lead at the half and allowed the Saxons to close within six points — at 42-36 with 9:43 left in the game — before pulling away late.

Murphy led Alfred (8-11, 3-7 E8) with a game-high 16 points to go with five rebounds. A transfer from St. John Fisher after her freshman year, Murphy came into the game needing four points to surpass 1,000 points for her career at Alfred. She hit a three-pointer 3:55 into the game then surpassed the 1,000-point mark on a putback at the 14:23 mark. Freshman forward Grace Williamson had 10 points, a team-high eight rebounds and two blocks and senior guard Courtney Lincoln added 10 points and four rebounds.
