Two Freshmen Score Career Highs In Westminster's Loss at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - Two freshmen guards posted career highs for the Westminster College women's basketball team, but the Titans lost 63-53 at Waynesburg Wednesday night. The Titans lost their fifth straight game to fall to 4-16 overall and 0-12 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). Waynesburg improves to 15-5 overall and 8-4 in the league.

Freshman guard Courtney Zitt scored a game-high 19 points for her personal best, while classmate Gabby Holko, making her first career start, bucketed a career-high 14 points.

Zitt scored in double figures for only the second time in her career as her previous career high was 11 points.

Holko, who made 4 of 7 shots from 3-point range, got her first career start with Westminster's  leading scorer, senior guard Kaitlin McCarthy, out with an injury. McCarthy was averaging 9.5 points per game.

Three Waynesburg players scored in double figures led by Jessi Drayer with 18 points, followed by Hannah Hunter with 13 and Elisha Jones with 10. Drayer also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists.

Westminster out-rebounded Waynesburg, 43-35, with sophomore forward Katie Hughes  leading the way with 11 rebounds to go with two points.

The Titans also outshot the Yellow Jackets 39.2 percent (20-51) to 32.8 percent (21-64); however, Westminster committed 21 turnovers to Waynesburg's seven.

Westminster led by as many as five points, 17-12, in the first half before Waynesburg led by five, 25-20, at halftime.

The Titans led by two points briefly in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Yellow Jackets took control of the game by going on an 8-0 run. Waynesburg led 35-33 with 12:19 remaining before Hunter and Drayer sandwiched two 3-pointers around an Emilee Wagner lay-up to take a 10-point, 43-33 lead with 11:18 left.

Waynesburg led by no fewer than five points and by as many as 15 points down the stretch before coming away with the 10-point victory.

The Titans host Chatham Saturday at 2 p.m.
