Wilmington downs Marietta women 75-64

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team could not overcome a fast start by visiting Wilmington College, as it fell 75-64 Wednesday (Feb. 2) night inside Ban Johnson Arena. The loss dropped the Pioneers' record to 7-13 overall and 3-10 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Wilmington improved to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in the OAC. [Box Score]

Freshman guard Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County) led the Pioneers with 14 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Sophomore post Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem/Monroe Central) scored 13 points while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds and adding two blocks. Freshman guard Paige Lamb (Marietta/Marietta) and junior post Lizz Wilson (Ashtabula/Edgewood) each added 10 points. Senior post Mallory Hoff (Newport/Frontier) chipped in with nine points and nine boards in the loss.

Olivia Waters paced Wilmington with a game-high 16 points while adding three assists. LeAnn Topp added 13 points and five rebounds on the night. Andrea Anderson scored 12 points and pulled down four rebounds in the Quaker victory.

Wilmington never trailed in the contest as it shot 44.1% (26-of-59) from the field on the night. The Quakers jumped out early and pushed their lead to as many as 15 in the first stanza at 32-17 with 5:17 left before halftime. They then took a 38-25 advantage into the break.

Marietta cut the lead under 10 points on three separate occasions in the second half but could get no closer than eight points in the final 20 minutes. Wilmington held on down the stretch to win by 11 points, 75-64.

Marietta struggled shooting, connecting on only 37.5% (27-of-72) from the field on the night. The cold shooting was evident from behind the arc as the Pioneers connected on only 25% (7-of-28) from downtown while only attempting four free throws and connecting on three. Wilmington shot 36.4% (4-of-11) from long range and 76% (19-of-26) from the charity stripe. Marietta out rebounded the Quakers 46-38 but committed 16 turnovers to Wilmington's nine.

On Saturday, Marietta plays host to Ohio Northern University for a men's and women's OAC doubleheader inside Ban Johnson Arena on Winter Weekend. The women then tip-off at 2 p.m. and the men follow at 4 p.m. The 28th Marietta Athletics Hall of Fame Class will be introduced during halftime of the men's game. In addition, it is Coaches vs. Cancer weekend and the campus community has a variety of events planned to help raise awareness as well as funds to fight the disease.
