Colby women's basketball romps past USM

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College women's basketball team had a 40-19 rebounding advantage, forced 25 turnovers, and allowed no University of Southern Maine player to pull down an offensive rebound in a 74-45 non-conference victory on Tuesday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Jules Kowalski (Montville, N.J.)  was 7-for-8 from the field and scored a team-high 16 points for Colby (15-4). Diana Manduca (Portland, Maine) added 11 points and a team-high five assists.

The game was close early and the Huskies (13-7) led 14-12 with 12:41 left in the first half. Colby, though, used a 25-2 run to end the half to take a 37-16 margin at the break. The Mules held Southern Maine without a point for nearly 10 minutes until Becky Dixon (Pittston, Maine) hit a short jumper with 2:53 to the break.

The Huskies got as close as 15 points in the second half at 44-29 with 12:18 to play. Colby used an 18-7 run after that to go up 62-36 with 5:56 left.

Jil Vaughan (Wareham, Mass.) added nine points and six rebounds for Colby, which had 23 assists on its 29 field goals. Rachael Mack (Augusta, Maine) finished with six points and a team-best nine rebounds, Jayde Bennett (Lynn, Mass.) had eight points and four assists, Jacky McLaughlin nailed three 3-point shots for nine points, Jennifer Nale (Waterville, Maine) added seven points, and Kelly Potvin (Sherborn, Mass.) pulled down eight boards.

Colby had 13 offensive rebounds in the game and held USM to just one team offensive board.

Courtney Cochran (Waite, Maine) was 10-for-12 from the foul line on the way to a game-high 17 points for the Huskies. Dixon had eight points for USM, while Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, Maine) had five points and four assists.
