Senior center Mary Wilkowski (Savannah, Ga.) hit two major career milestones as she became Hamline University's all-time leading scorer while hitting the 1,500 career point mark in an 89-61 Piper victory over Augsburg College.
Wilkowski began the day by being named the MIAC women's basketball athlete of the week for her performances in last week's two-game sweep of #20 Saint Benedict and St. Catherine.
She entered the game 10 points shy of 1,500 and 22 shy of the school record, previously held by Deb Van Schooten '98 at 1,512 points. Wilkowski's record point total is now at 1,516 - and counting - with seven games left in the regular season.
Wilkowski scored the first four points of the game on a pair of jumpers that Kara Poirier (So., Eau Claire, Wis.) followed up with a three-pointer. Steph Rice (Jr., Staples, Minn.) then hit a jumper and a free throw for a 10-0 Hamline start.
Brittany Zins (So., Bloomington, Minn.) scored the Auggies' first points at 16:31, and she also cut the deficit to single digits, 14-5, at the 15-minute mark. But that would be the last time that the Pipers would lead by less than 10.
Wilkowski added seven rebounds while Poirier tallied 21 points. Poirier hit 7-of-9 from outside the arc in the game, accounting for all by three of the Pipers' three-pointers.
Steph Robinson (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa) added 17 points and Je'Naya Brown (Fy., Lewisville, Texas) tallied 10. Brown also added four steals.
Augsburg was led by 17 from Zins and 13 from Serenae Levine (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.).
The Pipers made 19-of-24 free throws, including 4-for-4 shooting from the line by Robinson and 6-for-7 shooting from Brown.
The Pipers are now 8-11, 7-9 MIAC while the Auggies are 5-14, 4-12 MIAC. Hamline hits the road to play at Gustavus Adolphus on Wednesday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m.
