Brooklyn Rolls Past CCNY, 77-53

New York, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team defeated the Beavers of the City College of New York (CCNY) earlier today in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match-up at Nat Holman Gymnasium on the campus of CCNY by a final score of 77-53. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 11-8 overall on the year, 7-2 in conference play, while the Beavers fall to 2-17 overall on the season, 1-7 in league play.

Down by one, 5-4, with 16:40 remaining before halftime, Brooklyn used a 10-0 run over the next 3:27 to take a nine point advantage 14-5. Seniors Elisha Raiford and Amber Gordon helped spark the run scoring four points each. The Bulldogs would control the rest of the half without relinquishing its lead and head into the break up 30-21.

Brooklyn would continue to control the game in the second half as the Bulldogs outscored the Beavers 47-32 in the period. The Bulldogs utilized a hot shooting hand in the half going 20-for-36 from the field (55.6%) to build their lead to as high as 28 on three occasions and coast to the 77-53 victory.

Leading the way to the BC win was Raiford, who finished with a team-high 16 points, while also recording seven rebounds. Senior point guard Ariel Smith filled up the stat sheet nearly posting a triple-double with 15 points, nine rebounds and nine assists, both game-highs. Junior forward Justine O'Callahan chipped in with 14 points and seven rebounds, while classmate Lauren Plagainos was the fourth Bulldog in double figure scoring with 11 points going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, to go with a game-high four steals.

Donika Rexhepi led all scorers for CCNY notching a game-best 24 points, to go along with nine rebounds, while Simone Tharkur finished the game with 16 points and nine rebounds for the Beavers. Syreeta Williams also grabbed nine rebounds on the day as CCNY won the battle of the glass 40-37.

Brooklyn's stingy defense forced CCNY into 23 turnovers in the game with 16 coming via steal. The Beavers were also held to 33.3% (19-for-57) shooting from the field for the game. The Bulldogs shot 49.3% (33-for-67) from the floor for the game.

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, February 2nd, as Brooklyn will play host to borough rival the Cougars of Medgar Evers College at the West Quad Center Gym in CUNYAC action. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm. The Bulldogs will look to take the season sweep over the Cougars as Brooklyn defeated Medgar Evers, 62-45, earlier this season on November 30th.
