RALEIGH, N.C. -- In the same gym where she recorded her 1,000th career point, senior guard Chelsie Schweers (Chesapeake, Va.) would add arguably the best game of her career. Schweers scored a career-high 45 points and bested her own school record with 11 three-pointers made, leading the 11th ranked Captains (18-2, 12-1) to an 81-58 win over Meredith College (4-12, 1-10).

Christopher Newport's all-time leading scorer added several accolades to her already impressive resume on Sunday, including joining Misty Hart ('98) as the only players in CNU history to score 40 points in a game twice in their careers. Schweers 45 points is the second highest single game total in school history, behind only Karen Barefoot's 48 against Virginia Wesleyan in 1993.

The senior guard had 22 points in the first half, as she led the Captains to a 15-point halftime lead, 39-24. Early turnover troubles plagued both teams, but the Captains would shake it off first, primarily behind Schweers' hot shooting and the Captains dominance on the glass. CNU outrebounded Meredith 20-8 in the first half, including a 10-0 edge on the offensive glass. Senior Barbara Davis led the way, hauling in six rebounds in the first half.

Davis played a tremendous game inside for the Captains on and off the stat sheet. She finished just shy of a double-double with 15 points and eight rebounds, adding a season-high-tying five blocks, three steals and two assists. She also sacrificed her body on three separate occasions, taking a charge to help swing momentum for CNU.

Davis was key in the second half, but it was still Schweers' show for the most part. She went 7-11 from the field in the second half, including an impressive 6-8 from beyond the arc. Her 45 points came on an extremely efficient 15-23 shooting, whiles he knocked down 11-16 from three-point land.

The Captains got the lead to as many as 22 early in the second half, as Schweers hit a three with 12:04 remaining to put CNU up 59-37. The Avenging Angels, though, would begin to mount a bit of a comeback. The home team would score 18 of the next 27 points to pull back within 13 of the Captains on a Megan Rahn three-pointer from the top of the key. With under four minutes to go, though, CNU managed to hold off the run and punctuated the win with Schweers' 11th three-pointer with 52 seconds remaining, putting the lead to a game-high 24.

The Captains shot 54.7% from the field in the game, on 29-53 shooting, including over 61% from three-point land (11-18). Rebounds were equal in the second half, giving CNU the 12-board edge in the final, 33-21.

Meredith was led by Rahn, scoring 19 points on 6-of-9 from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers. Ashley Hudson also had a solid game, scoring 17 points for the Angels. Bryana Holmes was also in double figures, scoring 10 points.

Schweers 45 points put her past the 2,500 mark for her career as she becomes one of just five players to ever reach that plateau. She also moves up the list in career three-pointers made, tied with Philadelphia Baptist's Jessica Doane for fourth all-time with 364 made treys.

Christopher Newport is off until Saturday, when they will return to action against N.C. Wesleyan at home in the Freeman Center. The Captains will host the Battling Bishops at 2:00 pm on February 5 as a part of a double-header with the men's team.
