Worcester State Cruises To 62-32 Victory Over Salem State

Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Kara Rogers (Lowell, MA) and senior Alexis George (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) poured in totals of 12 points apiece to help lead Worcester State to a 62-32 victory over Salem State this evening in women's MASCAC basketball action at the Lancer Gym.

With the win, the Lancers improve to 10-7 overall and 4-1 in the league, while the Vikings dip to 3-11 and 0-5 in conference play.

Rogers and freshman Meaghan Burns (West Brookfield, MA) would score 23 of the Lancers 33 bench points this evening as Rogers also made five steals and doled out a trio of assists. Defensively, sophomore Gina Sicuso (Stoneham, MA) grabbed five rebounds while senior Becca Giguere (West Brookfield, MA) notched totals of four steals and four helpers.

Sophomore Madeline Park (Blue Hill, ME) paced the Viking offense with nine points while junior Amy Barry (Manchester, NH) and first-year Lisa Aylward (Everett, MA) equaled six. Alylward pulled down a game-high 10 boards while junior Breanna Comeau (Amesbury, MA) added nine caroms for the visitors.

Worcester State used a season-high 20 steals to force 29 turnovers as they had a commanding 29-10 advantage in points off of their opponent's miscues. The Lancers also played a stout defensive effort as they held the Vikings to make just 10 field goals in the entire contest, eight of which came in the final stanza.

SSU led in total boards (41-38) and offensive caroms (16-12) while the hosts controlled the paint by a 20-10 margin.

The contest was tied 7-7 with 14:07 left on the clock in the first period as Barry nailed two three-pointers to help lead Salem State's offense. It was then that the Lancers did not allow another made shot from the field as they would outscore the visitors with a 19-2 outburst for the 26-9 advantage at the intermission.

After the break Worcester State extended their lead by as much as 32 points (58-26) with less than five to go as they would cruise ahead for the triumph.

George is now 41 points away from becoming the 16th player to reach the 1,000 point milestone.

The Lancers are back in action on Saturday when they venture to MCLA for a 3:30 road trip. Salem State hosts UMass Dartmouth at 6 PM on Thursday night.
